Project Update 08/05/2026

From "Gallows Corner"

Go to the project

Good Afternoon,

Here is the latest update from our water main diversion at Gallows Corner.

Our teams are working extremely hard around the clock to complete testing and commissioning of the water pipe. The fast-paced and significant work the teams have carried out so far means TfL can partially re-open the junction.

On Sunday 10 May 2026, Gallows Corner will partially reopen to general traffic.

Drivers will be able to travel through the area via:

  • A12 Eastern Avenue eastbound and the roundabout
  • Flyover from A12 Eastern Avenue East to A127 Southend Arterial Road eastbound only
  • Straight Road in both directions and the roundabout
  • Roundabout and A12 Colchester Road eastbound only
  • Main Road in both directions and the roundabout

The following roads remain closed to traffic and diversions remain in place:

  • No access from the roundabout onto A12 Eastern Avenue East
  • No access from A12 Colchester Road to the roundabout
  • No access from the roundabout onto A127 Southend Arterial Road
  • No flyover access from A127 Southend Arterial Road to A12 Eastern Avenue East

Bus routes via Gallows Corner (routes 174, 496, 498 and 499) may experience delays of up to five minutes.

Travel advice

  • Anyone driving through the area should plan ahead and leave more time for their journey
  • Drivers travelling long-distance westbound in the area should continue to re-route via the M25 and use the M11 and A13 to complete their journeys
  • Bus users should plan ahead, allow more time for your journey and check before you travel on TfL’s website.

The road network at and around Gallows Corner is expected to be very busy and subject to queues and delays to journeys.

Customers who have contacted us via the community hub will receive a response by the end of next week.

Thank you again for your patience.

This is embarrassing now. It's coming up to a whole month since the last post here, we were told back then that the issue would be resolved within a week. Instead we saw a very public finger pointing game between ES Water and TFL. The least you could do at this time is post some regular updates so us residents aren't left in the dark. The partial reopening doesn't mean that this is no longer causing residents problems.

Still no update on this from your company nor TFL. Everybody visiting the site is reporting that hardly anyone is working there at any time. See link to news story here https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1EqhXKGcCT/ This is an utter disgrace for all of you concerned, and you are treating all of the local residents and local businesses abysmally. I am stopping my water bill payment and council tax, until you sort this mess out, and also reporting this to the National Environment agency. As I have requested, please provide me with compensation claim information forthwith, and I will be referring this to my legal team. Yours sincerely Joel Billinton

So yet another week and another week of no updates from ESW Water. You told the public that the project would take 12 weeks. Then you told us it would open in January. Then you told us it would open in April. Only two week ago you told the public that final testing would take one week and that you would then hand over the site to TfL. You haven’t done this and the public is left with… tumbleweed. You are taking the public for a ride and treating us with contempt. When will you finally provide a full and honest update on when this shambles will finally be over?

@Darty Renda Hi Darty, thank you for your message. I would like to reassure you that the significant planned Transport for London (TfL) and Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) work at Gallows Corner are now substantially complete. We know how frustrating this situation has been for local residents, businesses and road users TfL have now completed extensive technical and safety checks on the flyover, and Gallows Corner has partially reopened to general traffic, with some restrictions remaining while the wider scheme is concluded. Thank you, The Project Team

This does not answer the question at all: Almost three weeks ago you told the public that final testing would take one week and that you would then hand over the site to TfL. Has final testing been completed? If not, why not? Have you handed over the site to TfL? If not, why not? If final testing has not been completed, by what date will you complete it? If you have not handed over the site to TfL, by what date will you hand it over?

Substantially complete? Then why are you digging new holes-in a different place that has already been resurfaced?

Fast paced are you seriously for real!!! Why two weeks ago did you say work would be completed in the week. When will this work be completed and the road and junction open fully. Please also advise how compensation can be sought for this utter farce.
