Project Update 27/04/2026

From "Gallows Corner"

Go to the project

Hi everyone,

Here's the latest update from our water main diversion at Gallows Corner.

All significant TfL works at Gallows Corner junction are now complete. In recent weeks, Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) has also completed its construction activities and had begun testing the new water main. The testing process identified some additional work that will be completed this week. Following this, TfL will undertake the final works to allow the road network to fully open.

TfL and ESW are working closely together to assess whether parts of the road could reopen sooner while the remaining work continues. Further safety and technical checks are required before this can be confirmed, and these checks are being carried out as quickly as possible.

We recognise the disruption this work is causing for people travelling through the area, as well as local residents and businesses, and we thank everyone for their continued patience.

Completing this work properly is essential to protecting water supplies in the area. Our teams are working from 7am to 7pm with some extended hours up to 10pm to make sure we complete this as soon as possible.

TfL and ESW remain focused on progressing the remaining work and reopening the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

Thank you, as always, for your continued patience while we carry out this complex work.

On 27 April 2026 you wrote (in this post): “The testing process identified some additional work that will be completed this week.” The week ended on 1 May 2026. Therefore can you now confirm that the additional work has been completed? If the work has not been completed, please explain why it has been delayed.

During the early stages of this project, water got into the ground causing heave and damage to foundations. Now you have at least one deep leak-can you catagorically confirm this leak found during testing will not cause further damage?

Fw: Gallows Corner roundabout ESW water main delay compensation Sent: 30 April 2026 13:57 To: heidi.mottram@nwl.co.uk Subject: Fw: Gallows Corner roundabout ESW water main delay compensation From: Joel Billinton Sent: 30 April 2026 13:52 To: carolyn.gordon@nwl.co.uk Subject: Gallows Corner roundabout ESW water main delay compensation Dear Carolyn I am emailing you to complain profusely about the unacceptable repeated delays of the Gallows Corner roundabout ESW water main works. This has been a travesty of a project from the beginning. We have had repeated broken promises to completion dates, and as local residents we were promised this would be completed by the end of April But has been delayed yet again with no clear date. This has now almost taken 12 months, when this was estimated to take only 3 months. This has impacted local businesses, increased pollution levels hugely, business have gone out of business and lost revenue, absolutely ravaged local residents And damaged businesses in this local area where we live for far too long. Every time I have visited the site, there are hardly any resources working on it, and contractors & workmen just standing around. This is frankly unacceptable. Your team ought to be working 24x7 to get this completed now. This has become an utter farce & a travesty. From aerial photos I’ve seen the main water pipe is not even straight, and going through a tight bend at the junction Which seems a very poor design choice. I am seeking compensation for loss of business, damage + cost to my car (tyres+suspension) due to the potholes on the diversion routes for over a year now that we have had to endure. Also lost time, and also additional petrols costs, as well as environmental damage/pollution. Please let me know how & where to raise a compensation claim. I also want to see a pollution test also actioned, for carbon monoxide levels, as this is extremely detrimental to our health. Please advise me when you have done that & send me the results as soon as possible, as I will be raising this with the Environment Service Also provide a clear date for completion and you need to inform local residents for this, and also provide reductions in either their water bills or you can talk to Havering Council to have council tax reductions this year.

You have caused the residents of Havering and local businesses massive costs. You have overrun by 7 months and counting. Technically you’re in breach of contract and as such every driver who is spending around 20 to 30 minutes longer and several additional miles each diverted journey is entitled to compensation from Essex & Suffolk Water. My calculation for the wasted time and reduced car value due to increased mileage is £100 each month. Do we send interim invoices for £700 and then a final invoice when you finally finish this poorly run project?

Poor , from a three month horrible inconvenience to close to a year , bills have gotten higher as well as wasted fuel and time sitting in log jams and im sure you will raise your bill at the end of all this poorly managed project

@Derf Nannerb Totally agree, I live at the end of straight rd and since this project started my water pressure has been terrible sometimes taking 30mins to run a bath. Terrible communication from tfl or water company. Also feel sorry for the local businesses who have had to put up with this for nearly a yr. I’ve even had conversations with some workers in the cafe at Masefield crescent and they even said this was never going to be completed in 3 months, all lies and as you have said they will raise the bills when completed to pay for there incompetence!
