Hi everyone, We just wanted to share a brief update from the project team working on diverting our water main at Gallows Corner. You may be aware that the existing main sits within the foundations of the flyover, which it predates, so the work being carried out by TFL requires us to carry out this work. The good news is that we continue to make good progress, in line with the new agreed overall programme, and with multiple teams working concurrently to ensure we deliver this work as safely, efficiently and swiftly as possible. We've been able to keep on programme despite last week encountering another uncharted gas main, which needed careful handling while we worked with the pipe's owners to ensure it was not hazardous. We will continue to work with TFL and all other partners on site to complete our work in line with the overall flyover project.Thank you, as always, for your patience and understanding.

Hi everyone,We’re pleased to confirm that the new water main installation within the road closure section of Steeple Road in Latchingdon has been successfully completed. As a result, the road will be re-opened on the afternoon of 6th November, one day ahead of schedule. While further pipe installation is required to complete the full 3km pipeline scheme, this remaining work will take place entirely within fields. No further road closures will be necessary.Thank you.

Hi everyone,As of this week, we have successfully installed 2,000 metres of new 250mm diameter water main. The vast majority of this has been laid within the field edge.We are currently working on the one section where installation in the roadway was unavoidable—specifically in Latchingdon, between the Steeple Road/Burnham Road roundabout and just past Lawlinge Road, where the route re-enters the field. This section, which requires a road closure, is progressing well and remains on track for completion by the planned end date of 7th November. We are also working hard to complete this section ahead of schedule, if feasible.Following completion of the road closure section, the road will re-open and our focus will then shift back to the remaining pipe installation within the field, as we begin to approach the connection into the existing water network near Mayland.Thank you,The Project Team

Hi everyone, Good progress continues to be made on site with our water mains renewal. This week, we anticipate completing the first of the two sections of pipelaying within the roundabout area. The second phase of the roundabout works shall follow on sequentially and is planned to commence next week.We have also commenced breaking ground for pipelaying at the most south-easterly section of the main, where the second gang continues to make progress. We are also liaising with TFL regarding a third working area, west of the roundabout, and hope to have that work up and running in the next couple of weeks. As always, we continue to work closely with TFL and all partners on the site, to ensure we can maintain this good progress, as safely and quickly as possible. Thank you again for your patience,The Project Team

Hi everyone,We wanted to let you know about ongoing progress on our mains renewal work at Gallows Corner.Since last week’s update, we have excavated a further 10m-plus of ground for the section of main being laid within the roundabout area, and we have the first pipes not only in the ground, but connected and the ground already backfilled. We’ve also started work this week on another phase of work to the south east of the site. This means we will be actively working on two stretches of the larger main at the same time, helping to make progress as quickly as possible. And we remain on track to complete the last of the smaller local mains within the next fortnight. We’ll continue to update you on a regular basis. Thank you, as always, for your patience.Thank you, The Project Team

Overview of the workThe renewal of the ageing Gallows Corner flyover is essential to ensuring the safety and reliability of the road network in Havering and indeed across East London. Gallows Corner flyover was built in the 1970s as a temporary structure and ensuring that this asset is in good order is vital to keep our city moving. This flyover requires major strengthening to ensure it can serve Londoners for generations to come. The speed and weight limits implemented in previous years have allowed the structure to continue operating safely but a major refurbishment project is now taking place to avoid future disruptions to the road network. These essential works will enable larger vehicles to use the flyover again. The completed flyover will also include new pedestrian and cycle crossings at the roundabout to make journeys safer for pedestrians and cyclists, while improved road markings and resurfacing will improve journeys for people driving. Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) have a large strategic water main within the supporting structure of the flyover and four smaller mains close by. As the flyover was originally meant to be temporary, these were not moved at the time of construction. However, the flyover renewal provides an opportunity and a legal requirement to do so now. Diverting these mains now not only protects them from the heavy engineering of the flyover project itself, but allows them to be repositioned where they would cause significantly less disruption in the case of maintenance or repairs, ensuring a reliable and resilient supply of water for customers now and for generations to come.Current positionTfL, working with its contractor Costain, is pressing ahead to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible. Good progress has been made on the flyover itself, with the final span removed in early August. But unforeseen problems with the condition of the ground around the water main have unfortunately delayed that part of the works, and this in turn has affected the overall timeline. Planning a major multi-disciplined construction programme of this complexity takes considerable time and effort, which we have collectively worked to compress into a matter of weeks.ESW work is now focused on completing the diversion of the fifth main, the largest of the five. Works on the four smaller mains diversions are well underway and near completion. The original plan had been to use a directional drilling technique, creating a bore wide enough to pull the new main through from one side of the junction to the other, without having to disrupt progress on the flyover activity and allowing both projects to take place concurrently. However, unforeseen ground conditions in the form of pockets of shale has been encountered and have caused significant engineering challenges. The presence of shale means that a self-supporting tunnel cannot be formed as shale does not hold its shape to from a tunnel, preventing a pipe being pulled through. The ground conditions also posed a risk to the flyover construction, eliminating the possibility of us pursuing a second, and deeper bore attempt.A revised plan is currently being finalised, and every effort is being made to minimise further delays. We are actively exploring all available options to expedite works by deploying additional resources and extending working hours. These measures are aimed at optimising on-site productivity and ensuring that the remaining works are completed as safely and efficiently as possible. With both projects requiring revisions to their original plans for already complex pieces of engineering, the teams from all parties are working closely and at pace, with daily site meetings among numerous weekly touch points, to ensure the new programmes align and can be delivered cohesively and safely, with the aim of minimising the additional delays from the extended timeline.ESW and TfL have worked very closely on this project throughout its planning and implementation. ESW maintains a transparent and solution focused working relationship with TfL, underpinned by regular co-ordination meetings. The team remains rightly focused on resolving these issues swiftly and collaboratively and are working towards the completion. What next?Once the aligned programme is finalised, the revised timescales, along with details of how this will impact the local road network and any mitigations, will be communicated to local customers and stakeholders. We are working with TfL to finalise and communicate this information as quickly as possible.

Hi everyone,We just wanted to keep you updated regarding the silt matting in the ditch.Following a review with the Environment Agency, we will be retaining some silt matting within the ditch systems to help capture any remaining iron deposits. On Wednesday 30 July, the majority of the existing matting will be removed. We will then install new matting at two final locations, which will remain in place until Autumn. These final positions have been carefully selected to ensure there is no increased flood risk through the village. We will continue to regularly monitor the condition of the matting until its final removal later in the year.We thank you for your continued understanding.

Hi everyone,We wanted to share a quick update on the borehole work taking place in your area. The test pumping is now complete, and we’ve stopped putting water into the ditch system. Throughout this work, we’ve been mindful of the area’s history with flooding, and our installation of the coconut matting was carefully planned to help manage and reduce any potential risk.We completely understand there may be some concerns about the matting still being in place. Before we can remove it, we need to work closely with the Environment Agency to agree the best way to carry out the clean-up, making sure that any iron staining or silt doesn’t flow further downstream into the river. Here’s what’s coming up: Tuesday 15 July – We’ll be carrying out a full environmental assessment of the ditch. Thursday 17 July – We’ll meet with the Environment Agency to agree the next steps. Week beginning 21 July – Once we’ve agreed a plan, we’ll start removing the matting and begin any necessary remediation work. In the meantime, we’re continuing to regularly check the ditch and the matting to make sure everything remains safe and is not increasing the flood risk. We’re also keeping a close eye on the weather and will make any adjustments needed if heavy rain is forecast. All the actions we’re taking are focused on protecting both the community and the environment, and we truly appreciate your continued understanding as this work progresses.Thank you,Project Team

We have recently completed the drilling of a new groundwater production borehole off Bungay Road in Holton. We are now entering the next vital phase—testing the flow, volume, and quality of the water. As part of this process, we are carefully discharging groundwater into the local ditch system along Bungay Road and Lodge Road. This discharge is fully permitted by the Environment Agency and meets strict environmental standards to ensure no harm to the local environment. What to Expect: Testing period: 24/7 continuous discharge from 9 June to 14 July 2025. Visual changes: You may notice increased water flow in the ditches and some white or orange discoloration, caused by naturally occurring chalk and iron minerals in the groundwater. Environmental precaution measures: We’ve observed some orange discolouration due to naturally occurring iron oxidation and, as a precaution, are installing additional silt matting in the ditches. Our contractors will be active in the area during this installation. Monitoring: We will continue with regular water quality testing and visual inspections to ensure conditions remain within safe and approved limits. We will also ensure that the discharge does not result in water backing up in the ditches. Regulatory engagement: We are in consultation with the Environment Agency regarding these additional protective measures. Please be assured—your water and sewerage services will not be affected by this work.Thank you for your understanding as we carry out this essential testing

Hello Everyone, Welcome to our new Community Hub for the River Blackwater Eels Projects and thank you for visiting. I’m Kerri and I am the new Project Manager for Essex & Suffolk Water’s Eel Regulation Programme of Works. For those of you who followed us on the Community Portal will know there were three projects planned in the Langford Mill / River Blackwater area designed to prevent eel entrapment within our intake and pumping stations. I’m pleased to confirm two of these projects are now complete and we are now well underway with the third and final scheme, to install a new eel-friendly screen at our Blackwater Intake, on the River Blackwater. We have started the design phase, which is progressing well, and I will soon be able to share some drawings here on the Hub so you can see what we’re planning to install. Over the next few months, you might notice some occasional extra activity at this site, as we carry out surveys and investigations to support the design but most of the planning and design work will be done off site. There will be regular updates in this section of the Hub to keep you up to date with progress so please follow this project (click on the blue follow icon at top right of the page) if you would like to sign up for email notifications of new updates.

We are pleased to confirm that the section of work installing the new water main along the road is now complete and the traffic lights have been removed. We are now just preparing for the final connections of the new pipe in the Jubilee Fields car park and then will need to do the same back down at the junction with Bradwell Road (there won't be any work in the road itself). We will then switch the water supply entirely over to the new pipe and the old pipe will be taken out of use.We would really like to thank the entire village community for their amazing patience, understanding and cooperation whilst we have been carrying out this work. By doing this, you have helped us effectively replace 1.2km of old poor condition water main with a new polyethylene one that will reliably supply the village of St Lawrence Bay for many years and generations to come. Our team will now move on to replace another old and in poor condition water main along St Lawrence Hill and Bradwell Road between Blackhouse Farm and St Lawrence Church

To mitigate for some unexpected delays on the drilling works and make use of the good weather, we have decided to extend our working hours on the site. We shall now be working up to 8pm in the evenings and will also be working Saturday and Sundays. The drilling works has now entered a new phase involving a different drilling technique. Although, I’m hopeful that the noise and traffic movements haven’t impacted our neighbours, the new drilling technique is generally quieter so should be less noticeable than before. I appreciate your ongoing understanding of the need for the works and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused. If you do have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact the project Manager, Dan on 07862 260498.
