Suffolk Mains Renewal, Fressingfield

This significant investment of £1.4 million will involve replacing approximately 8 km of water mains and associated communication pipes, as well as installing new boundary boxes. This project will help reduce unplanned supply interruptions caused by ageing infrastructure.

When is the work taking place?

The project runs from 3 February 2026 until the end of 2026, delivered in three main phases:

Phase 1 – Road Closure

Location: B1116 from Mill Lane (Weybread) → Jubilee Corner
Dates: 2 February 2026 – Summer 2026
Details:

Full road closure for mains replacement
Jubilee Corner remains open during early works
Clearly signed HGV-suitable diversion routes in place

Phase 2 – Road Closure

Location: Stradbroke Road → Fressingfield Water Tower
Dates: Summer 2026 – Winter 2026 (TBC)

Details:

Works near the primary school
Sections closest to the school delivered during summer holidays where possible

Phase 3 – Final Closure (Jubilee Corner)

Location: All roads leading from Jubilee Corner
Dates: Autumn 2026 – Winter 2026 (TBC)
Details:

Short, concentrated closure to complete final connections
Final commissioning before the road fully reopens

Community Hub Admin Team 1 month ago Hi everyone,Despite the exceptionally high rainfall across East Anglia in recent months and with January alone exceeding its average rainfall, our teams continue to make excellent progress on the water main upgrade. To help keep the project on schedule, we’re working on efficiencies by carrying out drilling and open-cut digging simultaneously, allowing us to maintain momentum across different sections of the route.We’ve now installed 1,545m of 180mm pipe, including a complex 72m drill beneath the culvert, with a second drill completing today. We’ve also reinstated 246m of open‑cut trench and excavated a further 100m this week, keeping the project on target.With recent feedback we have been queried on why these works can take time, to help understanding the complexity involved, including road closure restrictions, we are sharing the photos of our latest progress.These photos help show the challenging ground conditions, the careful engineering involved, and the safety measures in place. They give a clearer picture of what’s happening on the ground, including:• Challenging ground conditions and existing utilities we’re working around.• Our drill rig in position completing the culvert drill shot.• The new valve configuration ready for installation near the memorial.• Sections of open‑cut trench that have been foam‑concreted and prepared for reinstatement.• Steel plates being used to safely maintain driveway access.• And the existing water main being replaced.Thank you for your continued support as we deliver this essential upgrade.As part of our ongoing works in the area, we remain committed to maintaining a safe, positive, and respectful environment for both our customers and our workforce.Recently, our team has experienced instances of challenging interactions, including aggressive behaviour from members of the public, which is not acceptable. While we understand that essential works can be disruptive and frustrating, we kindly ask all members of the community to treat our on-site teams with courtesy and respect to ensure we can deliver this project with no delays to our proposed timeframe.Our colleagues are working hard to deliver improvements that will benefit the whole community, and their safety and wellbeing are extremely important to us. We want to ensure they can carry out their duties without feeling unsafe or at risk.We’re now eight weeks into our forty week programme, and we’re pleased to share that installation work is progressing well. We’ve shared new photos to help our community see the scale and complexity of the project, and to give a clearer understanding of why this type of essential work takes time and careful planning.The team is working through challenging ground conditions with the wet weather and navigating around existing utilities, which requires caution and patience. Community Hub Admin Team 2 months ago Hi everyone,Work has now begun on the open‑cut section along Harleston Hill, starting at the War Memorial and progressing towards the culvert. The team has also completed the road crossing near the gas main at the Mill Road junction.Over the coming week, crews will continue open‑cut installation and complete the final trial holes ahead of directional drilling. Preparations for drilling beneath the culverts will also take place.Directional drilling is planned to start on Monday 23rd February with two teams working at the same time: Teams are continuing open‑cut installation along the roadside. Additional teams carrying out the directional drilling beneath key crossing points. The works are being delivered simultaneously to help with efficiency of delivery. Traffic & Pedestrian AdviceSafety measures remain in place throughout the works: Large sections of the road are reduced to a single lane with barriers. Please drive cautiously and follow traffic controls. This area is access only for school traffic, deliveries, residents, and emergency services. Please use hazard lights when passing through the closure. Pedestrians should use designated routes and keep a safe distance from construction activity. Please be aware that heavy plant and machinery will be operating in the area. Your safety remains our highest priority. This essential work is being carried out because customers have experienced a significant number of bursts over many years, leading to frequent disruption. Why we are doing this workBy renewing the entire stretch, rather than carrying out small repairs, we will: Eliminate weak points that repeatedly cause leaks and bursts Reduce disruption for local customers and road users Protect network resilience, especially where bursts could affect wider areas and storage Minimise the need for emergency traffic management, particularly during evenings and weekends Connect with previously upgraded pipework in The Street, Weybread, and from Ebden’s Corner to Rattlerow Hill, ensuring a reliable, modernised water route What this means for customers Once current project is complete, customers can expect:Fewer interruptions to water supply More stable water pressure A significantly reduced risk of emergency repair work Less disruption to traffic and local journeys Our team is dedicated to ensuring the best outcomes for everyone in Fressingfield. Community Hub Admin Team 3 months ago Hi everyone,The team is working in collaboration with Cadent gas under the current two-way lights to cross a high-pressure gas main. A secondary visit is required to excavate with their supervision, which has been scheduled for Friday 23rd January. The two-way lights will remain in place until this work is complete.Following this, the planned road closure from Monday February 2nd will be in place from the B1116 Mill Lane (Weybread) to Jubilee Corner until August 2026. A secondary visit is required to be undertaken by Cadent Gas which will take place on the 23rd January.In the meantime, traffic management remains in place with two-way lights, and the permit for these measures has been extended until 30th January.Next Steps:Complete excavation and prepare for gas supervision visit on 23rd January.Thank you,The Project Team
