Suffolk Water Supply Projects
East Anglia is one of the driest parts of the country and is classified by the Environment Agency as being a “Serious Water Stressed Area”. Essex & Suffolk Water is forecasting that there will not be enough water to meet predicted demand over the next 25 years and beyond and that we need to prepare for worsening droughts.
Our Water Resource Management Plan (WRMP) set out a range of options for infrastructure projects to ensure we can continue to deliver clean, clear drinking water, even in the most severe droughts. We consulted on these plans in draft in 2022 and 2023 and have used the feedback to help develop our final plan, which was approved by Defra in 2024. You can find the WRMP at www.nwg.co.uk/wrmp.
Our plans are essential to provide water for local and national growth and the region’s broader economic and infrastructure development. At this stage no decision has been made on what these projects are, although they include consideration of pipelines, storage tanks and reservoirs.
Over the coming months we will be working with stakeholders to determine how the schemes will be delivered; ensuring that we are working collaboratively with the local community whilst delivering the new water supplies as quickly as practicable.
